Hyperhidrosis & miraDry
Hyperhydrosis (Excessive sweating) is common (prevalence of approximately 5%) and can have a devastating effect on a patient’s quality of life, causing physical discomfort, secondary skin problems, social and emotional sequelae such as anxiety and depression, with disruption of occupational, social, and daily activities. This is particularly relevant for us in tropical North Queensland. North Queensland Sweat Clinic is a physician led clinic offering treatment for primary focal idiopathic hyperhidrosis.
Our clinic acquired the miraDry® system in 2019 which is the only TGA listed & FDA approved, non-invasive, permanent treatment for patients suffering from focal axillary hyperhidrosis & bromhidrosis (underarm sweat and odour). It dramatically reduces sweat, odour and axillary hair in as little as one treatment, in one hour. This System uses thermal energy that targets and permanently eliminates the sweat (eccrine) and odour (apocrine) producing apocrine glands in the treated area. The efficacy and safety of miraDry® is supported by many clinical studies including randomised controlled trials and has been used in over 140,000 treatments in more than 50 countries.
Until recently, miraDry® was only available in metropolitan cities in Australia requiring patients to travel long distances for a treatment. Accessibility to this system in Townsville has enabled us to service patients from all over North Queensland (Townsville, Cairns, Mackay, Mount Isa, Charters Towers, Ayr, Home Hill, Bowen, Ingham & surrounding areas).
We offer an initial bulk billed consultation to all patients to discuss treatment options for focal Axillary, Palmar & Plantar hyperhidrosis, which include miraDry® and Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS).
Helpful Information
Primary Idiopathic Focal Hyperhidrosis treatment Options:
- Miradry - (Microwave thermolysis) Only permanent treatment for significantly reducing underarm sweating, odour and hair with as little as 1-2 treatments, currently TGA approved only for axillary hyperhidrosis.
- Iontophoresis - For people with palmar & plantar hyperhidrosis. During iontophoresis, a medical device is used to pass a mild electrical current through water.
- Topical clinical grade Aluminium based antiperspirants.
- Botulinum injections - effective for many regions, but effects lasts for <6 months and therefore treatment needs to be repeated on a regular basis.
- ETS (Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy) - Permanent results but is an invasive surgery.
- Oral Therapy e.g. Oxybutynin – Symptomatic benefit but may result in intolerable side effects.
Treatment Algorithms:
- Primary Focal Axillary Hyperhidrosis
- Primary Focal Palmar Hyperhidrosis
- Primary Focal Plantar Hyperhidrosis
- Primary Focal Craniofacial and Gustatory Hyperhidrosis
- Generalized hyperhidrosis
